Level:  Introductory

Although the semantic web is being discussed more and more broadly, it is still a relatively rare presence within conventional data-processing industries. It's true that building sound ontologies on which to base a semantic repository requires special skills but, once established, the benefits can be many, from more rapid application development times to more reliable validation strategies to increased understanding of one's data.

This presentation will provide an overview of:

  • What an ontology is
  • How semantic repositories differ from more conventional data stores
  • The benefits that such an approach can provide to your data management and data governance efforts
  • How to begin evaluating whether or not a semantic approach is right for your organization

David Kowalski, Ph.D., has spent his entire professional life showing organizations how to manage, govern, leverage & protect their data. As the head of MIDAS Advisory services, he works with senior information managers at large corporations to assess the efficacy of their information management practices and helps to devise strategies to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of these projects.
